August 27 2 PM: “Women on Wheels: Bikes, Liberation and Suffrage” at the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, 151 Charlotte St, Canandaigua. The 1816 Farmington Meetinghouse will co-sponsor this event, where historian Kjirsten Gustavson, will present her “Woman on a Wheel” program. Gustavson, of NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will appear in her reproduction 1890s bicycle costume, and talk about the impact of the bicycle on women’s social status in the years before the vote. She will be joined by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, represented by Barbara Blaisdell and Melinda Grube, who had a lot to say about “bikes, liberation and suffrage,” and will be happy to say it again!
After a short discussion, visitors who are so inclined, will be invited to jump on their own bikes to join Ms. Gustavson on a 40 minute round trip ride around the Gardens and on to the Ontario County Fair Grounds and back. Refreshments will be served at the Mansion after the discussion and available until the bikers return. Bikers fourteen years and younger are required to wear a helmet. This event itself is free, after paying an entrance fee to the Gardens. Contact Sonnenberg at Sonnenberg.org or (585) 394-4922 for details.
